Moose Shed Antler
Is it possible for a moose to have large antlers in the early spring?
I know they shed them in the fall, but do they ever not shed them? At our local sanctuary, someone wrote that they saw one with a huge rack a few days ago. Is this possible?
Moose shed their antlers in late autumn or early winter, after the rut. They begin to grow again in spring, covered in a layer of skin called velvet, which carries the required nutrients to the developing bone. The antlers will be fully grown in time for the rut in autumn, and the velvet rubbed off on branches and bushes. The males then use them to fight for access to the females (females do not have antlers). It would be extremely unlikely for a moose to have large antlers in spring, but there is a small possibility that, if the animal has some kind of hormone imbalance, its antlers might not have been shed when they should have been.
